Identify exactly what is licensed
Record the species, fishing area, holder, licence category, vessel and licence conditions before relying on a general explanation. DFO’s commercial licensing policy for Eastern Canada describes eligibility and vessel-registration concepts, with exceptions and fishery-specific arrangements that need to be checked against the actual licence.
An application, renewal, transfer question or contemplated vessel substitution may call for a different DFO procedure.
Use the federal licensing channel
Fisheries and Oceans Canada says its National Online Licensing System is the channel through which its managed fishing licence holders conduct licensing transactions. The system serves commercial, commercial-communal and other specified licence holders. Use its current instructions and the responsible DFO office for case-specific requirements.
Keep your licence documents, correspondence, vessel identification and applicable conditions together. Verify any published season or fishery plan against the particular licence and the current official notice.
Licensing is not the whole compliance question
Transport Canada publishes distinct registration, certification and safety requirements for fishing vessels, depending on characteristics such as gross tonnage. A DFO harvest licence does not replace those vessel requirements. For an enforcement issue, inspect the specific notice, regulation and licensing condition rather than assuming a general website resolves it.
